What travel documents do I need to get into Mexico?

The best place to go for this information is this United States State Dept. web paget http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_970.html
For citizens of the United States the best document is a passport.

More stringent requirements may apply if you are traveling with minors. The final authority in all these cases is the Mexican goverment. So to be as sure as possible it's best to contact the Mexican consulate nearest to you.

Citizens of other nations should check with the Mexican consulate and the approprate department of their own government.

How do I get to Cozumel?

The easiest way to get to Cozumel is to fly directly into Cozumel's international airport. The only way to get from the Cozumel airport to your home is either via an airport van or via a rental car. The airports vans charge a per-person rate that varies depending on where the home is located. We can't personally transport you; regulations forbid unauthorized third parties from making transfers. Nor are taxis allowed to make pickups at the airport - only drop-offs.

Can I get to Cozumel from the Cancun Airport?

Yes. Getting to Cozumel from Cancun is easy. You can go by land transportation to Playa del Carmen and then take the ferry to Cozumel. (There currently are no scheduled flights from Cancun Airport to the Cozumel Airport. )

You can take a cab, a bus, or a combi (minivan) to Playa del Carmen and from there take the the ferry to Cozumel. The cabs and mini buses are parked in various lots in front of the terminal. Cabs can generally accommodate no more than 4 guests. Minibuses can usually take up to 10 guests.

The bus service is called Riviera Bus Line. It's located at opposite end of the terminal from the arrivals section. So, when you leave the terminal, take a right and head all the way to the other end of the terminal. Go through the last set of doors marked "Llegadas Nacionales" (domestic arrivals). As soon as you go through the doors take another right and you will see a ticket window for the bus. When your re-exit the terminal go turn right and go to the parking lot there. That is where the Riviera bus will board. It's hard to miss since it will be the only bus there. Last time we checked the fare was 65 pesos.

Whether you take a taxi, minivan, or bus, once you get to Playa it's still a few hundred yards to the ferry. Click here for ferry schedule and info.

You can hire men called triciclistas who use large tricycles with extremely large and deep baskets to transfer your baggage to the ferry. Their services cost only a few dollars. Please keep in mind that they take a lunch break at 1:00 PM. On the Cozumel side the services of the triciclistas are available as well. However, they're not as necessary because when you get to the entrance of the pier, taxis can pick you up right there to take you wherever you want to go.
Keep in mind that the Playa del Carmen - Cozumel ferry is a passenger ferry only. It cannot accept automotive vehicles. There is a car ferry but rental cars are not allowed to use it. Anyway, this ferry is really not suitable for tourist use. There are often long delays and if a shipment is deemed potentially hazardous (such as liquefied gas or gasoline), passenger vehicles won't be accepted. Unless you are planning on a really long stay or if your idea of a good time is waiting in line, your vacation time is too precious for the hassles involved.

Can I take a rental car from Cozumel to the Mainland or from the Mainland to Cozumel?

Unfortunately not. See above.

Can I drive to and from Chichen Itza in a day?

Technically speaking you can. Of course, from Cozumel first you will have to take the passenger ferry to Playa del Carmen and then rent a car and drive to Chichen Itza. From Playa del Carmen drive takes about 3 1/2 hours. So you're talking about a lot of driving and a long day, particularly if you are coming from Cozumel. It's a lot easier to fly there and back.

What about getting to Tulum and Coba?

Tulum is about an hour's drive from Playa del Carmen and Coba about 1.5 hours from Playa del Carmen. It's simple getting there by car as the highway is well and clearly marked with signs directing you to these destinations.
